So let’s bid July our farewell, we only interested with LiXian (Note: as many ppl say his “July Boyfriend”). This is the story of a young man from a small city, who try to find his directions. He have his own conflicts. He began (acting) with a rather high starts (Note: refers to his debut movie <Feng Shui>), also with high expectation toward self, who always set “method actor” as his goal: but the path were not smooth for him. Although he played many roles, all with an average good completion, still very few been remembered. He “not reconciled with”, but also not willing to give up. Finally, a path he never tried before, a youth love story —- which might also be the character that received the most criticism about his acting skills, surprisingly, brings him popularity, reputation and better future opportunities.

LiXian got discovered (Note: this was actually a Chinese words play, discover written as “发现” in Chinese and LiXian written as “李现”, they share the same character “现”, which also share the same meaning of “show/appear”, so actually the use of “现” here is an ambiguity, and this words play also apply to the article title). Even best screenwriter cannot create some details like these: he stand in the corner of the elevator with his head relied on the wall, in front of him there were two bodyguards in black suit blocking ppl from enter the elevator and rushed with pressing floor No., but just by the second when doors closing, he smiled. This smile caused ppl outside the elevator as well as who saw this pic/clip online with massive responds, “oh oh oh I felt drunk.”

Now, you see LiXian everywhere: a handsome looking, highly recognisable figure with an impressive height, and when his 185cm meets six packs abs, only one sentence could summary — way too handsome. Girls discovered his name just like discovered a new continent.
Just so handsome. In some online forum, there’s also an old post been digging out — for the guy like LiXian who satisfied every criteria with traditional values of handsome, if he cannot become popular then this is just a waste of treasure. This post were like a prophecy, and he became popular now: with the past July, you could see he’s name and related topics on hot topic list 24 hrs everyday, data from different social media platforms, e.g. WeChat, Baidu are all rocketed. Moreover, he’s sense of existence definitely not just an online scenario, the influence spread into real world — in shops, you could see girls written down LiXian’s name with all coloured pens, green, black, orange, all colours: LiXian LiXian, LiXian
So did all these happens solely because of he’s looking? When one throw oneself into showbiz industry, it’s more like throw oneself to fate, you’ll never know when popularity will visit, as well as when downturn will brings you away — so did he handsome? Seems not always: he’s face are not that perfect, because he learnt saxophone when he was young, so he’s cheeks always plump like squirrels. Or let’s say he don’t really looks as young and youthful as other popular idols.
But for this time, he gained popularity without doubt.

LiXian already 28 (Note: again, not yet, will turn 28 in Oct. lol). It’s been 9 years now since he debuted, but for a young man who may seek to raise fame, his age are just not ideal anymore. He began (acting) with a rather high starts, also with high expectation toward self, who always set “method actor” as his goal, but the path were not smooth for him: he played many roles, all with an average good completion, still very few been remembered — who still remembered the actor of the son in <Feng Shui>? He “not reconciled with”, but also not willing to give up. Finally, a path he never tried before, a youth love story —- which might also be the character that received the most criticism about his acting skills, surprisingly, brings him popularity, reputation and better future opportunities.
This is not his first opportunity to raise fame, two years ago, with <Tientsin Mystic>, the online drama where he plays main lead for the first time, gained very good responds. However due to platform restriction (i.e. online only), the influence were very much limited, and he became quiet again after time passed.
By that time, he also don’t think he got popular himself. The whole process is like been pushed up highly then put down again softly. — When interviewers asked him how he feels with getting popular now? LiXian answered: I don’t think I am popular, I only got 2M followers. — Now, in the past month, his followers rocketed over 15M, weekly activated fans (i.e. leaving comments or reposting etc., to have real interactions with him) also approaching million. In the 30th week of 2019, he’s on the top of fans interaction ranking among all celebs of his generation (i.e. born in 1990s).
For this time, he sensed gathering popularity. He left a message on Instagram — Out of the depth of misfortune comes bliss (Note: “否极泰来” in Chinese). With these 4 characters, you could feels he’s excitement. The photos he posted together with this caption also changed a bit in style, he used to post cold colour tone pics or very artists style photos, but for this time he posted 4 colourful selfie with light colour tone and different facial expressions, he looks young and happy, and you could easily feels his liveliness spreading out from the screen.

The world now seems like turning around LiXian’s name, everythings changed. When someone raised fame, every details of them will be zoomed in, they need to be ultra careful with every step since then. So for now, before going for schedules, LiXian’s management team’s only requirement for him is “not to wear oversized shorts and slipper, pls dress smart, otherwise ppl might talk.”
“Alright alright, so can I ride electric scooter?” LiXian asked.
This is his special sense of humour. Last summer, after a 118 days long filming, LiXian treated himself a summer holiday. He catch up with dramas/movies, doing fitness training as well as tiding his shoes. One day after training, he was scanning a shared electric scooter when he saw somebody try to capture pics of him, and he greeted this guy “friendly”. Few days later, LiXian’s father shared him an article link in their family chat group with title: LiXian, who used to be very popular could only rely on electric scooters nowadays.
“Hahaha, this is insane.” LiXian replied.

LiXian posted on his weibo last summer

MeiFeng had met with LiXian again just few days ago, when LiXian went back to Beijing Film Academy for <love story 1980> recording — In this film LiXian will play as the main male lead, and his co-star this time is ChunXia. MeiFeng seen LiXian in good status, wears a white t-shirt and black cap, laughable as always.
MeiFeng is the director of <love story 1980>, whose also a professor at Beijing Film Academy, as well as director LouYe’s “golden screenwriter”. (Note: MeiFeng & LouYe were both representative figures for Chinese film industry, especially LouYe, who’s very famous with battling against censorship, and their most remarkable cooperated film is <Summer Place> in year 2006, which were been invited to Festival De Cannes, however due to they haven’t report to Gov authority with permission before attending, later this film got banned in China).
After <love story 1980> wrapped last year, this is MeiFeng’s first time to reunion with LiXian, and he’s now became a “top star”. MeiFeng were not surprised (with LiXian’s current achievement) tho, he still remembered while he’s searching for main male lead for this movie: on their first meet, they chatted a while, then MeiFeng decide “no need to look for others” — the movie is about young ppl’s story back in 1980s, so he want to find someone “not that fashion, looks very honest, and can act maturely at the same time”, and LiXian got all these criteria he’s looking for, he (MeiFeng) like his (LiXian) sense of “decent”.
LiXian cherished this opportunity a lot, before meet with director, he’ve read the full script in advance. He told MeiFeng he really like this story, echoes a lot with the main role, and he want to take this role so much that he can’t even sleep at night while thinking about the story. And this will be LiXian’s first time to be a main lead in big screen project.
If we looks back, the most highest ranking of his name in movie cast list would be his debut work <Feng Shui>, as one of the main lead (of <Feng Shui>), LiXian started with a rather high standard: in year 2010, when he just entered university and during military training (Note: Chinese uni’s tradition for freshers, generally took place before term officially starts and will last about 2-3 weeks), he was been selected by director WangJing, to take the role as XiaoBao, a quiet boy whose dad had passed away many years ago and gradually became very hateful towards his mom.
This movie received very good responds, also with a 8.6 score on DouBan (Chinese IMDb). He was still young by that time, and that’s also the first time in his life he felt the sense of fame, he went back to JingZhou (his hometown) happily and visited his school teachers. And during this Spring festival (i.e. early this year, 2019) he visited his old school again, and left a message on a black board in a classroom — “Grade 3 Class 9, student LiXian have been here.” He also went to shopping mall with friends/families and been spotted by many ppl, some ppl saying he’s “really active”, and many young ppl in JingZhou by that time shared their ‘encounter by chance’ pics of him.

Local medias also reported news about him coming home (Note: refers to early this year). As a “movie actor”, LiXian had became his old school’s role model, and will be named very frequently in his hometown, “XiaoBao in <Feng Shui>” were once his new nickname.
Since middle school, LiXian already became sort of “town’s highlight” (i.e. representative figure of his hometown). He’s the first ever who been offered by Beijing Film Academy in his town, after received the offer, local TV station also interviewed him, and aired this short documentary with title: LiXian shows us his saxophone skills.
After movie (i.e. <Feng Shui>) been released, LiXian’s dad feels very proud and thought this was something worth celebrate, so he bought many tickets and invited friends to cinema, after watched the movie he also commented with LiXian’s acting, saying he’s “too nervous, not relaxed enough”, then asked LiXian to lose more weight, because he looks bit broad on screen.
This movie also marked LiXian with a life long influence, which totally reshaped his future self-expectation and understand towards arts. He value this movie a lot, mentioned countless times with interviews, he think this movie formed his “foundation of arts perception”
He realised from this movie that — “what a low budget literary movie would be like while making, and how it feels when you cooperate with professional actor/actress.” Soap drama were not an option for him to considered with by that time .

However the fame gained by <Feng Shui> were very much limited within his hometown — who still remembered the actor of the son in <Feng Shui>? Even MeiFeng can’t remember clearly. LiXian’s acting skill were not bad, even not play for mean lead, he’s acting are having high completion, but still only few been remembered: the first time MeiFeng noticed LiXian was from <Tientsin Mystic>, and the first impression is “he’s acting are very natural” — later when friend introduced LiXian to him, he just got to know that he (LiXian) also graduated from Beijing Film Academy.
After they cooperated together, and LiXian mentioned he actually participated with <Feng Shui>, MeiFeng starts to recognise him as “XiaoBao”
“I really didn’t know, I’ve watched that movie before.” When MeiFeng recalled and recognised, LiXian just laughed. This is not the first time he experienced similar situation: after he raised fame now, when fans searching for his old works and they realised: ah, so he’s the one who played xxx.”

He’s always in his own world: when ppl suggest to go to pubs, most of them were drinking or dancing, but he was talking about some art exhibitions with others. He enjoys reading books, he likes Mishima Yukio or Dazai Osamu (Note: both are famous JPN authors). He enjoys watching film — once been encountered occasionally by fans on air plane, he’s watching <The Assassin> (Note: a literary film directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien, a famous Taiwan director). He also talked about many novelists and directors he admired in many interviews. Even when he replied to the paparazzi’s fake drama articles (Note: refers to the electric scooter one), he quoted <Walden> firstly —
“The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is.”
This is truly an artists style. He have many artists-styled hobby as well: reading books, watching drama/movie, practice handwriting, doing fitness training and very interested with photography. After he watched some movie he’ll take time and write reviews, sometime ppl will call him “a movie reviewer”. When he felt exhausted from works, he’ll treat himself a GR camera as present. His Instagram account also been discovered after raised fame and ppl found that he’s actually more activated there, as well as more close to his real mentality.
So did his preference towards artists style were been influenced by <Feng Shui>? First time experience were always the most unforgettable ones. At least with previous interviews, he do reckon in the past he’s more good at science when in school, a guy who “not really enjoy reading”, sometime even escaped classes to play basketballs, feels very vague about future and preference.
But for now, he want to keep with his style: to walk alongside with the path that <Feng Shui> leads him to, to keep this high standard with aesthetic and work quality. When ppl asked what’s his goal, he’ll answer in a half-joking style “to become the best actor of Golden Horse Award” (Note: a very high standard Chinese-language film award originated in Taiwan), and his role model is Chang Chen (Note: a Taiwan actor) whose famous of his literary style films.
“This is a goal, it’s not saying that I must get the best actor prize from Golden Horse Award, tho of course I don’t refuse if I can.” Then he laughed out in his symbolic style. But after this small joke he’ll get back his seriousness, he explained — indeed he want to become an actor like Chang Chen, to achieve with certain standard.
However, fate seems joked with him a bit. And of course LiXian also knows that the chance for him gaining his debut project were in fact quite “accidental”, the truth that why director appointed him were only because he’s looking for “a boy who can speak with HuBei dialect” at that time, and just by chance, LiXian can.
When compared with other actor/actress (in <Feng Shui>), LiXian’s performance in the movie were not outstanding, he described his own acting as “clumsy” in this movie. Apart from few pictures of him on red carpet with filming team, no matter in media or in audience reviews, he’s name were very much absent.
However this didn’t stopped him from chasing his dream. LiXian described himself as “persistent”, and what he really persisted with are — “wanted to become a skilful actor since he debuted”. He keeps fighting in this direction, and it’s also been proved again when he takes role in <love story 1980>.
After he raised fame recently, many media try to arrange interviews with him, but most were been rejected by his agent. He’s management team think it’s will be much better to arrange interviews after this movie (i.e. <love story 1980) released, which will make the interview more rich with content — his agent positioned him as “quality actor”, to let him concentrate with professional acting, which also meets LiXian’s own ideal.
Apart from promotion period for his works, he very few accept interviews, as well as very limited with attending variety shows. He think to attend too many variety shows will influence actor’s “sense of mystery” — “if you want to be an actor, you should pay more attention with making your characters, you have to keep your sense of mystery, so audience will always feels fresh with your characters.”
4
That high starts (i.e. <Feng Shui>) sometimes will brings LiXian a rather dejecting feeling which also secretly mixed with a few portions of pride: “I have already showed the audience with a high score <Feng Shui>, I have been tasted the fruit of acting, if I just suddenly stop all these (i.e. acting), what else can I do then?” He said so once in an interview.
He’s acting skills were rather good when compared among same generations, but still not outstanding enough to let ppl remember with just one sight. This is also the dilemma his facing, when ppl describing a gifted actor/actress, they’ll say “very spiritual”, “very good with understanding”, and when comes to LiXian, the description changed to “HanHan” (i.e. written as “憨憨” in Chinese, means very honest and real, but sometime may not looks smart. Note: I also explained this term in a 20190731 fanmeeting fan account, you could find it with my tweet). For this description, it’s might be advantages when used on others, but not really suitable for a handsome young man like LiXian.
Soon after, his career flopped down to the bottom. For a three years period of time, he don’t have projects to work with. Once upon a time he just one step away from bankrupt, he don’t even have enough finance to pay his rent. He was totally lost: with taken several small characters in some insignificant dramas, which also have low score on DouBan, plus after few times that he cannot afford his rent, he actually do considered about give up.
“LiXian was a rather complicated person.” Some showbiz personnel commented: he was totally involved with achieving high standard performing arts, he always want to be a “skilful and in-depth” actor, to participate with meaningful projects, but he very few got the chance, and he hardly reconciled with it.
Once during an interview, LiXian said: “Senior GuoDeGang (Note: a Chinese XiangSheng performer, similar to talk show) had said that, to be successful, you need 3 points of hard working, 6 points of luck, then 1 point with ppl’s help. Even I worked hard to my full, plus there’s ppl willingly to help me, I only got 4 points, still far from successful.” He didn’t mentioned luck in here, and maybe that’s what he think he truly lacked of deep in his mind.
For a very long period of time, he’s existence were minor. From a recent interview together with his co-star YangZi, he mentioned that they once hosted an activity together in university, but YangZi didn’t remembered him.
He don’t want to give up, and when time comes to chose between realistic and ideal, he decided to take the middle path — he tried with his best in order to get a role in <who sleeps my bro> and reappeared into public sight, even this role is not the main lead. “After <Feng Shui>, then until my next project <who sleeps my bro> that allows me to be seen by public again, there were actually a 4-5 years downturn in between.” LiXian do reckoned himself once in an interview.

In year 2017, he appears in <Tientsin Mystic> as the first time main lead, and it’s an online drama. From a big screen literary film actor to participate in an online drama, it’s actually something very challenging for him by all means, but he said he really liked TM’s script. The responds of TM were rather good, and he also harvested his first round of fans.
Then in 2018, he taken the role in GGS. This is his second time to play as the main male lead, which also very differently from his previous preference with project selection. In order to play HSY well, he even watched and try to learn from the Korean drama <Whats Wrong With Secretary Kim>, he also shared review after he watched just like how he generally shares with other movies, but amazed many fans with his preference change, as most of the time he would share about Kore-eda Hirokazu (Note: JPN director of <shoplifter>) or Denis Villeneuve.

Note: this post were been deleted by himself few days after posted ^^
Also for this drama (i.e. GGS), it’s his first time to receive big amount of “criticism towards acting skill”: frowned expressions, embarrassed crying scene, logic stress for his lines etc., all been criticised by many audiences. Ppl also compared his acting for this time with his acting in <TM> two years ago, where he actually received massive praise by that time.
But just a drama like this, a drama setting that LiXian were not really familiar with, a drama that been criticised a lot, brings him explosively popularity, and let him truly entered public sight.

For ppl who have been worked with him, most of their comments are “he’s really humble”. Some interviewers would also noted down “gentle and modest” on their hand script. Once there was a fan encountered LiXian by chance on a same flight, and saw him helping out other guests with getting luggages from over head lockers after landed. Moreover, Ma SiChun were also on the same flight with them by that time, and LiXian were bit hesitated with how could he greet to her as she just woke up and seems still sleepy when landed, he wondered whether this is a good timing and looks just like “a high school boy who don’t know how to deal with girls”. (Note: this was happened in 2017, and this fan also written up a very long fan acc repo on weibo)
“How nice LiXian was? Sometime you’ll heard boys speaking “shit”, “wtf” as an oral habit, and I think it’s really normal, but really, LiXian won’t speak any.” This is from the professional game player WeiEn, who trained LiXian and his co-stars from GGS with gaming skills.

LiXian always works hard. When MeiFeng cooperated with him, the most impressive part of him was his hard working. “He’s very dedicated, can bare with whatever difficult situations.” MeiFeng mentioned this a lot, when on filming site, LiXian were very activated, he involved himself deeply with his character and will follow onsite playbacks carefully, after every take he’ll come to the monitor and watch, then he’ll ask MeiFeng — “Ah, teacher Mei, maybe I try another way in here will be much better?”
The latter half of the movie (i.e. <love story 1980>) were been filmed at Inner Mongolia. The script setting were during summer time but it’s actually been filmed during winter (Note: it can be very cold in Inner Mongolia during winter, around -4~-15), and all actors/actress need to wear summer clothes in cold weather, but LiXian never complained. Also he don’t need to bring his script while filming, as he had already remembered all his lines in mind, when he have spare time he’ll think about how could he be more natural with his acting.
LiXian also keeps a high self-discipline. In order to keep his body figure as an actor, he do a lots of training. He keeps a daily 5 km running since high school, even during filming he’ll take 30 mins with running when he can. Benefited from his long term training habit, he has a healthy and good looking body figure, also become spokesperson for a fitness app, there were also BTS clips of him doing training with his spare time while filming.
LiXian also treated all his characters seriously — in Dec. 2017, LiXian’s first time to participate in a historical drama <sword dynasty>, with Feng XiaoGang as producer. There were many action scenes in this drama, and many were required to be finished by actors themselves. LiXian was a total fresher for action setting, so in order to take the role well, he practiced very hard with sword skills. He refused to use stuntman and injured his back badly, until he started filming for GGS in Apr. 2018, he was still under recovery training for his back. His co-star YangZi once mentioned in an interview, that because LiXian’s back were badly injured, when they filming for the hug scenes, he need to firstly find the right angle and position, and to raise her up with some “trick strength”, he cannot raise her up directly.
With acting, sometime LiXian will adds his own design. For e.g. his frowned expression which been talked by audiences the most, were designed by himself in order to show HSY’s change alongside the story, as well as the scene where he touched the hot steel handrail and receded his hand quickly, were also his onsite design.

LiXian think himself as the non-gifted type, “so what I have been keep doing is to read many different books and watch all kinds of movies and drama, I believes that diligence makes perfect, so I keeps myself in that way.” He knows that he’s not the type can easily make big progress, so he keeps with learning and improving his weakness. He said he think himself as AlphaGo, to learn, absorb and improve from great amount of intake.
Yang TianZhen (Note: LiXian’s agent manager) once published a set of data in 2017, for 365 days of that year, LiXian spent 190 days with filming and 25 days with promotion session, which counted 60% of the year, there’s no “holiday” option been listed.
“I feels I never been famous.” LiXian used to said so. And now, he harvested his fame by his own persistent and hard working.
In MeiFeng’s eye, LiXian were actually a talented actor. All matured actors have their own methods with acting, and he said, LiXian’s method is to learn and to comprehend.
“He enjoys studying (his character), and will prepare a lot. For an actor like this, it’s only about time (with raise fame)”. MeiFeng said so.
