LiXian A Discovery ⎢x GuYu

So let’s bid July our farewell, we only interested with LiXian (Note: as many ppl say his “July Boyfriend”). This is the story of a young man from a small city, who try to find his directions. He have his own conflicts. He began (acting) with a rather high starts (Note: refers to his debut movie <Feng Shui>), also with high expectation toward self, who always set “method actor” as his goal: but the path were not smooth for him. Although he played many roles, all with an average good completion, still very few been remembered. He “not reconciled with”, but also not willing to give up. Finally, a path he never tried before, a youth love story —- which might also be the character that received the most criticism about his acting skills, surprisingly, brings him popularity, reputation and better future opportunities.

LiXian got discovered (Note: this was actually a Chinese words play, discover written as “发现” in Chinese and LiXian written as “李现”, they share the same character “现”, which also share the same meaning of “show/appear”, so actually the use of “现” here is an ambiguity, and this words play also apply to the article title). Even best screenwriter cannot create some details like these: he stand in the corner of the elevator with his head relied on the wall, in front of him there were two bodyguards in black suit blocking ppl from enter the elevator and rushed with pressing floor No., but just by the second when doors closing, he smiled. This smile caused ppl outside the elevator as well as who saw this pic/clip online with massive responds, “oh oh oh I felt drunk.”

Now, you see LiXian everywhere: a handsome looking, highly recognisable figure with an impressive height, and when his 185cm meets six packs abs, only one sentence could summary — way too handsome. Girls discovered his name just like discovered a new continent.

Just so handsome. In some online forum, there’s also an old post been digging out — for the guy like LiXian who satisfied every criteria with traditional values of handsome, if he cannot become popular then this is just a waste of treasure. This post were like a prophecy, and he became popular now: with the past July, you could see he’s name and related topics on hot topic list 24 hrs everyday, data from different social media platforms, e.g. WeChat, Baidu are all rocketed. Moreover, he’s sense of existence definitely not just an online scenario, the influence spread into real world — in shops, you could see girls written down LiXian’s name with all coloured pens, green, black, orange, all colours: LiXian LiXian, LiXian

So did all these happens solely because of he’s looking? When one throw oneself into showbiz industry, it’s more like throw oneself to fate, you’ll never know when popularity will visit, as well as when downturn will brings you away — so did he handsome? Seems not always: he’s face are not that perfect, because he learnt saxophone when he was young, so he’s cheeks always plump like squirrels. Or let’s say he don’t really looks as young and youthful as other popular idols.

But for this time, he gained popularity without doubt.

LiXian already 28 (Note: again, not yet, will turn 28 in Oct. lol). It’s been 9 years now since he debuted, but for a young man who may seek to raise fame, his age are just not ideal anymore. He began (acting) with a rather high starts, also with high expectation toward self, who always set “method actor” as his goal, but the path were not smooth for him: he played many roles, all with an average good completion, still very few been remembered — who still remembered the actor of the son in <Feng Shui>? He “not reconciled with”, but also not willing to give up. Finally, a path he never tried before, a youth love story —- which might also be the character that received the most criticism about his acting skills, surprisingly, brings him popularity, reputation and better future opportunities.

This is not his first opportunity to raise fame, two years ago, with <Tientsin Mystic>, the online drama where he plays main lead for the first time, gained very good responds. However due to platform restriction (i.e. online only), the influence were very much limited, and he became quiet again after time passed.

By that time, he also don’t think he got popular himself. The whole process is like been pushed up highly then put down again softly. — When interviewers asked him how he feels with getting popular now? LiXian answered: I don’t think I am popular, I only got 2M followers. — Now, in the past month, his followers rocketed over 15M, weekly activated fans (i.e. leaving comments or reposting etc., to have real interactions with him) also approaching million. In the 30th week of 2019, he’s on the top of fans interaction ranking among all celebs of his generation (i.e. born in 1990s).

For this time, he sensed gathering popularity. He left a message on Instagram — Out of the depth of misfortune comes bliss (Note: “否极泰来” in Chinese). With these 4 characters, you could feels he’s excitement. The photos he posted together with this caption also changed a bit in style, he used to post cold colour tone pics or very artists style photos, but for this time he posted 4 colourful selfie with light colour tone and different facial expressions, he looks young and happy, and you could easily feels his liveliness spreading out from the screen.

The world now seems like turning around LiXian’s name, everythings changed. When someone raised fame, every details of them will be zoomed in, they need to be ultra careful with every step since then. So for now, before going for schedules, LiXian’s management team’s only requirement for him is “not to wear oversized shorts and slipper, pls dress smart, otherwise ppl might talk.”

“Alright alright, so can I ride electric scooter?” LiXian asked.

This is his special sense of humour. Last summer, after a 118 days long filming, LiXian treated himself a summer holiday. He catch up with dramas/movies, doing fitness training as well as tiding his shoes. One day after training, he was scanning a shared electric scooter when he saw somebody try to capture pics of him, and he greeted this guy “friendly”. Few days later, LiXian’s father shared him an article link in their family chat group with title: LiXian, who used to be very popular could only rely on electric scooters nowadays.

“Hahaha, this is insane.” LiXian replied.

MeiFeng had met with LiXian again just few days ago, when LiXian went back to Beijing Film Academy for <love story 1980> recording — In this film LiXian will play as the main male lead, and his co-star this time is ChunXia. MeiFeng seen LiXian in good status, wears a white t-shirt and black cap, laughable as always.

MeiFeng is the director of <love story 1980>, whose also a professor at Beijing Film Academy, as well as director LouYe’s “golden screenwriter”. (Note: MeiFeng & LouYe were both representative figures for Chinese film industry, especially LouYe, who’s very famous with battling against censorship, and their most remarkable cooperated film is <Summer Place> in year 2006, which were been invited to Festival De Cannes, however due to they haven’t report to Gov authority with permission before attending, later this film got banned in China).

After <love story 1980> wrapped last year, this is MeiFeng’s first time to reunion with LiXian, and he’s now became a “top star”. MeiFeng were not surprised (with LiXian’s current achievement) tho, he still remembered while he’s searching for main male lead for this movie: on their first meet, they chatted a while, then MeiFeng decide “no need to look for others” — the movie is about young ppl’s story back in 1980s, so he want to find someone “not that fashion, looks very honest, and can act maturely at the same time”, and LiXian got all these criteria he’s looking for, he (MeiFeng) like his (LiXian) sense of “decent”.

LiXian cherished this opportunity a lot, before meet with director, he’ve read the full script in advance. He told MeiFeng he really like this story, echoes a lot with the main role, and he want to take this role so much that he can’t even sleep at night while thinking about the story. And this will be LiXian’s first time to be a main lead in big screen project.

If we looks back, the most highest ranking of his name in movie cast list would be his debut work <Feng Shui>, as one of the main lead (of <Feng Shui>), LiXian started with a rather high standard: in year 2010, when he just entered university and during military training (Note: Chinese uni’s tradition for freshers, generally took place before term officially starts and will last about 2-3 weeks), he was been selected by director WangJing, to take the role as XiaoBao, a quiet boy whose dad had passed away many years ago and gradually became very hateful towards his mom.

This movie received very good responds, also with a 8.6 score on DouBan (Chinese IMDb). He was still young by that time, and that’s also the first time in his life he felt the sense of fame, he went back to JingZhou (his hometown) happily and visited his school teachers. And during this Spring festival (i.e. early this year, 2019) he visited his old school again, and left a message on a black board in a classroom — “Grade 3 Class 9, student LiXian have been here.” He also went to shopping mall with friends/families and been spotted by many ppl, some ppl saying he’s “really active”, and many young ppl in JingZhou by that time shared their ‘encounter by chance’ pics of him.

the message he left on old school’s black board in JingZhou

Local medias also reported news about him coming home (Note: refers to early this year). As a “movie actor”, LiXian had became his old school’s role model, and will be named very frequently in his hometown, “XiaoBao in <Feng Shui>” were once his new nickname.

Since middle school, LiXian already became sort of “town’s highlight” (i.e. representative figure of his hometown). He’s the first ever who been offered by Beijing Film Academy in his town, after received the offer, local TV station also interviewed him, and aired this short documentary with title: LiXian shows us his saxophone skills.

After movie (i.e. <Feng Shui>) been released, LiXian’s dad feels very proud and thought this was something worth celebrate, so he bought many tickets and invited friends to cinema, after watched the movie he also commented with LiXian’s acting, saying he’s “too nervous, not relaxed enough”, then asked LiXian to lose more weight, because he looks bit broad on screen.

This movie also marked LiXian with a life long influence, which totally reshaped his future self-expectation and understand towards arts. He value this movie a lot, mentioned countless times with interviews, he think this movie formed his “foundation of arts perception”

He realised from this movie that — “what a low budget literary movie would be like while making, and how it feels when you cooperate with professional actor/actress.” Soap drama were not an option for him to considered with by that time .

3

However the fame gained by <Feng Shui> were very much limited within his hometown — who still remembered the actor of the son in <Feng Shui>? Even MeiFeng can’t remember clearly. LiXian’s acting skill were not bad, even not play for mean lead, he’s acting are having high completion, but still only few been remembered: the first time MeiFeng noticed LiXian was from <Tientsin Mystic>, and the first impression is “he’s acting are very natural” — later when friend introduced LiXian to him, he just got to know that he (LiXian) also graduated from Beijing Film Academy.

After they cooperated together, and LiXian mentioned he actually participated with <Feng Shui>, MeiFeng starts to recognise him as “XiaoBao”

“I really didn’t know, I’ve watched that movie before.” When MeiFeng recalled and recognised, LiXian just laughed. This is not the first time he experienced similar situation: after he raised fame now, when fans searching for his old works and they realised: ah, so he’s the one who played xxx.”

He’s always in his own world: when ppl suggest to go to pubs, most of them were drinking or dancing, but he was talking about some art exhibitions with others. He enjoys reading books, he likes Mishima Yukio or Dazai Osamu (Note: both are famous JPN authors). He enjoys watching film — once been encountered occasionally by fans on air plane, he’s watching <The Assassin> (Note: a literary film directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien, a famous Taiwan director). He also talked about many novelists and directors he admired in many interviews. Even when he replied to the paparazzi’s fake drama articles (Note: refers to the electric scooter one), he quoted <Walden> firstly —

“The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is.”

This is truly an artists style. He have many artists-styled hobby as well: reading books, watching drama/movie, practice handwriting, doing fitness training and very interested with photography. After he watched some movie he’ll take time and write reviews, sometime ppl will call him “a movie reviewer”. When he felt exhausted from works, he’ll treat himself a GR camera as present. His Instagram account also been discovered after raised fame and ppl found that he’s actually more activated there, as well as more close to his real mentality.

So did his preference towards artists style were been influenced by <Feng Shui>? First time experience were always the most unforgettable ones. At least with previous interviews, he do reckon in the past he’s more good at science when in school, a guy who “not really enjoy reading”, sometime even escaped classes to play basketballs, feels very vague about future and preference.

But for now, he want to keep with his style: to walk alongside with the path that <Feng Shui> leads him to, to keep this high standard with aesthetic and work quality. When ppl asked what’s his goal, he’ll answer in a half-joking style “to become the best actor of Golden Horse Award” (Note: a very high standard Chinese-language film award originated in Taiwan), and his role model is Chang Chen (Note: a Taiwan actor) whose famous of his literary style films.

“This is a goal, it’s not saying that I must get the best actor prize from Golden Horse Award, tho of course I don’t refuse if I can.” Then he laughed out in his symbolic style. But after this small joke he’ll get back his seriousness, he explained — indeed he want to become an actor like Chang Chen, to achieve with certain standard.

However, fate seems joked with him a bit. And of course LiXian also knows that the chance for him gaining his debut project were in fact quite “accidental”, the truth that why director appointed him were only because he’s looking for “a boy who can speak with HuBei dialect” at that time, and just by chance, LiXian can.

When compared with other actor/actress (in <Feng Shui>), LiXian’s performance in the movie were not outstanding, he described his own acting as “clumsy” in this movie. Apart from few pictures of him on red carpet with filming team, no matter in media or in audience reviews, he’s name were very much absent.

However this didn’t stopped him from chasing his dream. LiXian described himself as “persistent”, and what he really persisted with are — “wanted to become a skilful actor since he debuted”. He keeps fighting in this direction, and it’s also been proved again when he takes role in <love story 1980>.

After he raised fame recently, many media try to arrange interviews with him, but most were been rejected by his agent. He’s management team think it’s will be much better to arrange interviews after this movie (i.e. <love story 1980) released, which will make the interview more rich with content — his agent positioned him as “quality actor”, to let him concentrate with professional acting, which also meets LiXian’s own ideal.

Apart from promotion period for his works, he very few accept interviews, as well as very limited with attending variety shows. He think to attend too many variety shows will influence actor’s “sense of mystery” — “if you want to be an actor, you should pay more attention with making your characters, you have to keep your sense of mystery, so audience will always feels fresh with your characters.”

4

That high starts (i.e. <Feng Shui>) sometimes will brings LiXian a rather dejecting feeling which also secretly mixed with a few portions of pride: “I have already showed the audience with a high score <Feng Shui>, I have been tasted the fruit of acting, if I just suddenly stop all these (i.e. acting), what else can I do then?” He said so once in an interview.

He’s acting skills were rather good when compared among same generations, but still not outstanding enough to let ppl remember with just one sight. This is also the dilemma his facing, when ppl describing a gifted actor/actress, they’ll say “very spiritual”, “very good with understanding”, and when comes to LiXian, the description changed to “HanHan” (i.e. written as “憨憨” in Chinese, means very honest and real, but sometime may not looks smart. Note: I also explained this term in a 20190731 fanmeeting fan account, you could find it with my tweet). For this description, it’s might be advantages when used on others, but not really suitable for a handsome young man like LiXian.

Soon after, his career flopped down to the bottom. For a three years period of time, he don’t have projects to work with. Once upon a time he just one step away from bankrupt, he don’t even have enough finance to pay his rent. He was totally lost: with taken several small characters in some insignificant dramas, which also have low score on DouBan, plus after few times that he cannot afford his rent, he actually do considered about give up.

“LiXian was a rather complicated person.” Some showbiz personnel commented: he was totally involved with achieving high standard performing arts, he always want to be a “skilful and in-depth” actor, to participate with meaningful projects, but he very few got the chance, and he hardly reconciled with it.

Once during an interview, LiXian said: “Senior GuoDeGang (Note: a Chinese XiangSheng performer, similar to talk show) had said that, to be successful, you need 3 points of hard working, 6 points of luck, then 1 point with ppl’s help. Even I worked hard to my full, plus there’s ppl willingly to help me, I only got 4 points, still far from successful.” He didn’t mentioned luck in here, and maybe that’s what he think he truly lacked of deep in his mind.

For a very long period of time, he’s existence were minor. From a recent interview together with his co-star YangZi, he mentioned that they once hosted an activity together in university, but YangZi didn’t remembered him.

He don’t want to give up, and when time comes to chose between realistic and ideal, he decided to take the middle path — he tried with his best in order to get a role in <who sleeps my bro> and reappeared into public sight, even this role is not the main lead. “After <Feng Shui>, then until my next project <who sleeps my bro> that allows me to be seen by public again, there were actually a 4-5 years downturn in between.” LiXian do reckoned himself once in an interview.

In year 2017, he appears in <Tientsin Mystic> as the first time main lead, and it’s an online drama. From a big screen literary film actor to participate in an online drama, it’s actually something very challenging for him by all means, but he said he really liked TM’s script. The responds of TM were rather good, and he also harvested his first round of fans.

Then in 2018, he taken the role in GGS. This is his second time to play as the main male lead, which also very differently from his previous preference with project selection. In order to play HSY well, he even watched and try to learn from the Korean drama <Whats Wrong With Secretary Kim>, he also shared review after he watched just like how he generally shares with other movies, but amazed many fans with his preference change, as most of the time he would share about Kore-eda Hirokazu (Note: JPN director of <shoplifter>) or Denis Villeneuve.

Caption for LiXian’s post of him sharing with <WWWSK>, he then commented: don’t be surprised…Cuz I am also participated with a Mary Sue drama now, so I have to learn…
Note: this post were been deleted by himself few days after posted ^^

Also for this drama (i.e. GGS), it’s his first time to receive big amount of “criticism towards acting skill”: frowned expressions, embarrassed crying scene, logic stress for his lines etc., all been criticised by many audiences. Ppl also compared his acting for this time with his acting in <TM> two years ago, where he actually received massive praise by that time.

But just a drama like this, a drama setting that LiXian were not really familiar with, a drama that been criticised a lot, brings him explosively popularity, and let him truly entered public sight.

5

For ppl who have been worked with him, most of their comments are “he’s really humble”. Some interviewers would also noted down “gentle and modest” on their hand script. Once there was a fan encountered LiXian by chance on a same flight, and saw him helping out other guests with getting luggages from over head lockers after landed. Moreover, Ma SiChun were also on the same flight with them by that time, and LiXian were bit hesitated with how could he greet to her as she just woke up and seems still sleepy when landed, he wondered whether this is a good timing and looks just like “a high school boy who don’t know how to deal with girls”. (Note: this was happened in 2017, and this fan also written up a very long fan acc repo on weibo)

“How nice LiXian was? Sometime you’ll heard boys speaking “shit”, “wtf” as an oral habit, and I think it’s really normal, but really, LiXian won’t speak any.” This is from the professional game player WeiEn, who trained LiXian and his co-stars from GGS with gaming skills.

Professional game player WeiEn’s original weibo caption

LiXian always works hard. When MeiFeng cooperated with him, the most impressive part of him was his hard working. “He’s very dedicated, can bare with whatever difficult situations.” MeiFeng mentioned this a lot, when on filming site, LiXian were very activated, he involved himself deeply with his character and will follow onsite playbacks carefully, after every take he’ll come to the monitor and watch, then he’ll ask MeiFeng — “Ah, teacher Mei, maybe I try another way in here will be much better?”

The latter half of the movie (i.e. <love story 1980>) were been filmed at Inner Mongolia. The script setting were during summer time but it’s actually been filmed during winter (Note: it can be very cold in Inner Mongolia during winter, around -4~-15), and all actors/actress need to wear summer clothes in cold weather, but LiXian never complained. Also he don’t need to bring his script while filming, as he had already remembered all his lines in mind, when he have spare time he’ll think about how could he be more natural with his acting.

LiXian also keeps a high self-discipline. In order to keep his body figure as an actor, he do a lots of training. He keeps a daily 5 km running since high school, even during filming he’ll take 30 mins with running when he can. Benefited from his long term training habit, he has a healthy and good looking body figure, also become spokesperson for a fitness app, there were also BTS clips of him doing training with his spare time while filming.

LiXian also treated all his characters seriously — in Dec. 2017, LiXian’s first time to participate in a historical drama <sword dynasty>, with Feng XiaoGang as producer. There were many action scenes in this drama, and many were required to be finished by actors themselves. LiXian was a total fresher for action setting, so in order to take the role well, he practiced very hard with sword skills. He refused to use stuntman and injured his back badly, until he started filming for GGS in Apr. 2018, he was still under recovery training for his back. His co-star YangZi once mentioned in an interview, that because LiXian’s back were badly injured, when they filming for the hug scenes, he need to firstly find the right angle and position, and to raise her up with some “trick strength”, he cannot raise her up directly.

With acting, sometime LiXian will adds his own design. For e.g. his frowned expression which been talked by audiences the most, were designed by himself in order to show HSY’s change alongside the story, as well as the scene where he touched the hot steel handrail and receded his hand quickly, were also his onsite design.

LiXian think himself as the non-gifted type, “so what I have been keep doing is to read many different books and watch all kinds of movies and drama, I believes that diligence makes perfect, so I keeps myself in that way.” He knows that he’s not the type can easily make big progress, so he keeps with learning and improving his weakness. He said he think himself as AlphaGo, to learn, absorb and improve from great amount of intake.

Yang TianZhen (Note: LiXian’s agent manager) once published a set of data in 2017, for 365 days of that year, LiXian spent 190 days with filming and 25 days with promotion session, which counted 60% of the year, there’s no “holiday” option been listed.

“I feels I never been famous.” LiXian used to said so. And now, he harvested his fame by his own persistent and hard working.

In MeiFeng’s eye, LiXian were actually a talented actor. All matured actors have their own methods with acting, and he said, LiXian’s method is to learn and to comprehend.

“He enjoys studying (his character), and will prepare a lot. For an actor like this, it’s only about time (with raise fame)”. MeiFeng said so.

Things you might not know about LiXian

This article were posted by his agent in year 2018, with a selection of staffs and related personnel who had worked with LiXian before to share how they think about him.

【You might not know, that how much he loves sweets and coca-cola】

Staff who want to share anonymously: I have been working with LiXian for over a year now, when I just joined I heard ppl saying he keeps fitness training very hard, also very self-regulated with diets, so I was thinking he’s the type who don’t like sweet things by natural, but later I discovered — this is totally wrong! Sometimes staffs will order milk tea, and he’ll look enviously at it then quietly swallow his saliva. I remembered once we had a promotion activity with Dove (a chocolate brand) where you can DIY your own chocolate, then follows with dessert testing session. The activity were very successful and he eat so happily, like I never seen him eating sweet things in such a careless way. After the activity I asked him don’t you afraid with gaining weight? He smiled and said just for he can eat freely during this activity, he actually woke up early in the morning and spent 3 hrs with fitness training. He think the activity were mainly to promote chocolate and if he don’t eat any it’s will looks really weird.

No.1 team member from LiXian’s promotion team: while we filming for <only side by side with you>, one day he went out for dinner, he stood in front of the shelves for a while and staring at his favourite red velvet & black forest cakes…and in the end he choose to have salads 🙂

No.2 team member from LiXian’s promotion team: while we filming for a variety show, cuz there’s many scenes been taken at a fitness club, so he’s kinda accomplished his daily training goal, and decide to reward himself with a bottle of coca-cola when we went for hotpot after works finished, and his face were as happy as he just finished all exams from school. But later he felt regret on our way home, “no way, I still need to do training tomorrow morning.”

【He’s very persistent with working and self-discipline 】

Staff with Zhao as surname: LiXian are not always the same with how he looks, I am not using this description in a negative way, it’s actually means he always brings you surprise, and how he looks sometime just deluded ppl a lot. He’s not been spoiled, actually he’s strong enough, he’s not lazy and he’s highly self-disciplined. On 18th July 2017, the wrapping day for <only side by side with you>, he had to film with some military training scene, where required him to climb over a 2 meters high barrier. As all scenes will be filmed by real acting (i.e. no stuntman) so director asked actors to practise once first. Maybe it’s because his shoes not fit properly, he slipped while climbing and injured his arms. He didn’t tell anyone about this, and only comes to me when others were busy with setting cameras and said I got injured, could you help me with some quick aids as I still need to go back for filming very soon. So we cleaned the wounds roughly with water, and he went back for filming right after.

BTS during <only side by side with you>

And during the actual filming, he pays no attention with his arms, he crouched forward in the mud and also finished with climbing perfectly in one take. After washed off the mud, because there’s other scenes followed, so we cannot treat his wounds and he finished rest of the filming just like this. Although the wounds looks OK, I can imagine how it gonna feels when he crouching in mud.

BTS for <sword dynasty>

Before <sword dynasty> start filming, because he gonna take the role as a swordsman, and as he never ever had experiences with using sword before, so he asked for a 4 hours/day training spontaneously. There were many wounds left on his hands, but he never complained, he just want to be responsible with his role.

During filming, everyday when we finished and got back to hotel, no matter how late the time or how tired he was, as long as the fitness club still open, he’ll go for some training himself.

I remembered once after we finished a full day work schedule it’s already passed 9 p.m. and on our way home I heard him saying fitness club should still open, I need to hurry. Then around 11p.m., I saw he shared a pic of himself in fitness club on instagram.

Morris, Keep marketing manager: when I meet LiXian for first time, I think he’s just a humbled and cool young man. After he became keep’s spokesperson, we have to film the first training lesson with his as the instructor. Because Keep have very high requirements with instructor’s gesture quality, so for every motion we may need to retake many times in order to get the most perfect one, and he never complained and always try his best. Then when we saw he posted “working day, I can hardly feels my legs now…” the next day on weibo, we really respected him.

The second filming were 6 months later, we let LiXian to show how he understand our slogan “self-discipline gives me freedom”, in front of audience, he’s a good actor, but when back to normal life, what’s the motivation that driven him forward? We remembered that the filming day were actually his birthday, generally speaking ppl may prefer a day off for their meaningful dates, but due to schedule clash we could only arrange him for that day. So when we meet again, he seems matured a lot, I could see his passion with training, his requirement towards self, and his concentration with acting. I remembered there were some scenes will only film from the back, but he still take every scene himself for many times. We feels sorry for him as he may have repeated one motion over hundred times, but he smiled and joked with us: “with this volume (of training), I bet no more than 5 ppl in showbiz industry can become Keep’s spokesperson.” I know this is how he try to comfort us.

Amanda, from PUMA marketing department: my impression for this perseverance and healthy looking young man are —-diligence. Diligence is actually somethings very unique in showbiz industry, it’s not only to be diligent with your work, but also diligent with learning and improving, who never satisfied with oneself and always try to make perfection. Apart from showbiz industry, when you look at the whole society, younger generations now are gradually loosing their diligence, so for LiXian who still keeps his strength, will step much further and much better.

ZhuTing, Weiquan (the juice brand) senior marketing manager: as a professional actor, LiXian treated his career very genuinely. When we meet for first time, he’s very profession, humbled, handsome, passionate and always smiles…which all made us to understand him much better.

【He’s not as cool as he looks, he’s an interesting and caring young man】

Sissi Wang, Australia tourism department Asia Pacific manager: LiXian as the new generation actor are young and with a smart looking, having an international view and humbled personality, also good body figure. He’s having very good social image in China, so we choose him as the promotion ambassador for our tourism campaign. When filming on a hot ballon (for promotion advertisement), he’s actually acrophobic, but he encouraged co-actors/actresses not to be afraid. And he also remind his PA to take care when it’s raining outside.

Lily Jia, Australia tourism department communication manager: During our cooperation with LiXian, he’s very professional, polite, humbled and interesting, we have had a great time to work together, and not only for us who enjoyed our cooperation with him, some local medias also praised him a lot.

No.1 team member from LiXian’s promotion team: I remembered while we promoting Tientsin Mystic in other city, once we were waited at GuangZhou airport, cuz there were many of us so when we spotted an empty chair in a cafe, instead of seat down directly, LiXian firstly asked the person who sit next to the empty chair “excuse me, may I ask if this chair is free? Becuz we don’t have enough chairs.” And he only seated himself down after found chairs for me and stylists.

No.2 team member from LiXian’s promotion team: once we were on our way to the airport, LiXian suddenly remembered he forgot his ID, I asked the driver to stop first, then was just about to let him turn back, LiXian said it’s OK no bother, and jumped off cars, quickly scanned a shared bicycle by the road and ride all his way back to collect his ID.

Staff from <only side by side with you> team: last year during filming, once we have arranged dinner for everybody, and other staffs told me that LiXian should arrive soon. But I waited also looked around and still, no sign of him coming, so I wondered maybe he got lost or went to wrong place and sent him messages asking where is he. He replied that he’ll come soon, then 5 mins later, I saw a young man approaching with a bicycle, yeah, that’s him. He said he’ve been to a film academy near by, just to look around, and enjoyed some sense of uni life. So when imagine he wears white t-shirt and ride a bicycle in uni makes me feels he’s very genuine and cute.

Staff with Zhao as surname: after filming for <rush to the dead summer>, I asked him shall we go back to hotel directly? But he told me he want to go for a walk in a nearby uni, so that night, at XiaMen uni, he enjoyed himself with his walking, he said he really missed his uni time.

In post-HSY era, LiXian need to make his choice between KOL and actor.

In post-HSY era, LiXian need to make his choice between KOL (Key Opinion Leader, i.e. celebrity with large popularity) and actor.

*******

Clock back to end of July, 2018, after wrapping of HSY, LiXian have had a short holiday, and he posted 3 Weibo posts to say goodbye to this character.

During the making of GGS, he were suffered from scoliosis, lumbar muscle strain, ankle joint dislocation, double meniscus crack and chronic gastritis (Note: most of the physical injuries were actually been caused during the making of <sword dynasty>, as he refused to use any stuntman with action scene). He commented “in the past two years, I keep fighting with the career I beloved, I believes that diligence makes perfect, and I precious every opportunity in front of the cameras” under a picture where he just finished with some traditional Chinese medication treatment which had left many stasis on his back.

After a whole year, in July 2019, the drama which been renamed as <dearest & lovingly>, became the most sensational dark horse among all dramas been scheduled this summer, and also brings LiXian fame from a less well-known actor to a top KOL, you could see his frowned drama stills everywhere on weibo.

HSY

This explosively fame were a bit sudden for LiXian, many fans who crushed on him so hard don’t even know who he is before this drama. When the popularity of drama spread from screen to real life, drama fans starts to build their imagination of HSY on to LiXian himself, they want HSY as boyfriend, but ofc he must got LiXian’s face. From less well-know to top topic on social media, he made his name a significant scenario within 20 days.

With dramas now approaching to the end, whether to become a KOL that fulfil all fans’ ideal; or still remains as an actor to keep distance from public and to keep his freedom, LiXian have to make his choice.

-1-

After he raised fame, he’s busy with drama promotion and attending different activities, and most of the time ppl would saw him as well-behaved, hardly show mistake. When during live stream, he shows very gentleman side with caring his co-star YangZi’s outfit, passing her cushion to protect her privacy cuz she’s wearing dress in front of the camera, but as he always shows his true self as funny and playful, ppl can’t really classify him as “idol” or “male-god” (Chinese internet slang, especially when describing good-looking male celebes). So fans starts digging all his weibo and instagram posts and to watch his previous interviews, they try to find a real LiXian, but he always shows something new when u think u have already fully understand him, he’s very unpredictable.

For e.g., during interviews when been asked what will he do first if one day he woke up and found himself became a female, he laughed out and answered “to check my cup size”

to check his cup size

In GGS, LiXian acted as HSY, who always shows a poker face but in fact having a caring soul, handsome, rich, top in his area. He firstly appeared as a “cold” style, and there’s many of his signature lines circulating on social media.

To be honest, this is not some very top quality drama, character settings are bit old-fashioned, as well as the “sweetness” of this drama, but that’s really what audience enjoyed. LiXian gained nearly 10M followers on weibo in half month, and one of his planned fan meeting were also been cancelled due to fans-overload, and his weibo post for asking fans to leave calmly and take care with safety harvested 170k comments and 1.6m likes.

You have to admit that this explosively popularity were mostly contributed by LiXian’s handsome looking and HSY’s attractive character setting. But if you try to equal LiXian to HSY, it will definitely not lead to a happy ending, sometime even for fans.

LiXian are actually very different from HSY, when ppl digging all his social media history and found out that he had liked some JPN ladies posts on Instagram, or others saw he @ his ex-gf and saying she had the same breast shape with her “female-god” (i.e. the actress she admired a lot), some were been deeply shocked and said they gonna stop fangirl-ing him, and some even said they felt disgusted when imagine how he’s expressions will be like when he liking/posting all these.

(Note, the reason why I translate this part out is firstly, I know there’s rumours about him with all kinds, so just like he don’t hide any of his interests on social media, also not deleting any when been discovered to just to fake a so called “perfect” figure, we as fans also not gonna deny any of these either; secondly, actually before he raised fame and date back to 2017, there’s already ppl talked about him liking those JPN ladies pics on instagram, and he replied with holding a magazine with Miranda Kerr on cover page, you could still found that pic on his instagram now, and that’s all his attitude about how he view body figures and how he understand about beauty. Ofc you may also felt shocked and can’t accept this, that’s fine, as he shows his most real side and he knows that not everybody gonna like it, he still shows, so clearly, when compared with worrying ppl’s preference towards him, to live freely is something more important to him.)

Also, he’s not as cold as HSY, some ppl have PS-ed his face onto a donkey, with caption: “TN, I am back!!”. Then one of his fansite posted announcement on weibo, saying this meme is very disrespectful towards him, and hope ppl not to share this meme any more. According to fans, they think (asking ppl not to use this meme) is not them getting too sensitive or mental, it’s just to show the most fundamental respect to him. But out of everybody’s expectation, LiXian used this meme himself later when commenting some posts, and then been reminded by other fans so he also apologised directly to his fansite.

the meme that he used

So for LiXian, to receive such a massive fans responds may still something new to him.

In summer 2017, he entered public sight with <Tientsin Mystic>, which also his first time to play as a main lead in drama. TM got 8.3 score on DouBan (Chinese IMDb), but as it’s only an online drama, so the actual attention been raised were very much restrained. During making of TM, LiXian visited hospital 3 times for emergency, with temperature at 6 degree, he wears t-shirt and acting in water, he also spent 38 hours with filming full action scenes in a 2 days setting. After filming wrapped, he actually went to Thailand and got his diving certificate, he think “maybe this will be useful with future project?”

TM brings him certain levels of fame, works been fully scheduled till next year, but the popularity were still very much limited. So with time passed, ppl starts to forgot him. One day after he done with fitness training, he scanned a shared electric scooter to go for dinner, but been captured by paparazzi and few days later a piece of news saying he’s not doing well been published, and he’s dad also saw that article, so he sent the article to LiXian and asked what’s happens.

LiXian named out the paparazzi were from SOHU in his weibo post, and saying what they have written is very “boring” —— to speak up directly to medias in this way (i.e. making open weibo post), were very less likely to happen with matured celebes.

If we looks back further, he debuted with the movie <Feng Shui>, for this movie he cooperated with Yan BingYan, Jiao Gang etc. who are all very professional actors/actresses, and this movie got 8.6 score on DouBan. He also mentioned countless times with many interviews about how this movie influenced him so much, how he learned of what kinds of actor that he want to became from all these seniors, and “what are the things that you need to be perseverances with“.

When he participated with this movie, he was still at uni, and with full expectations for future. However after graduation, he realised that there’s no single project for him, he’s the last one who left the dorm on graduation day, and he felt totally lost with future. Days like this continued for 3 years, he could only earn a living with taking small roles for advertisements, after paying all rent and for the hardest time, he can’t even get any cash from ATM cuz the balance left in his bank card were just way too few. There’s only frozen dumplings left in fridge, and he’ll have 10 for lunch, then 10 for dinner.

Many actors have had their hard times, and LiXian very seldom talked about his, when been pushed too much by interviewers, he’ll just say he already forgot. He’ll joking with Chinese XiangSheng (similar to talkshows) “to be successful, you need 3 points of hard working, 6 points of luck, then 1 point with ppl’s help. Even I worked hard to my full, plus there’s ppl willingly to help me, I only got 4 points, still far from successful,” he said this during an interview with <Southern China Magazine> , “you’ll never get to an end if you always compares with others, the only way to keep a better mentality, is to compare with your past self.”

And this summer, LiXian’s luck finally arrived.

-2-

Different from other young KOLs, LiXian already 28 years old (note: not yet, will turn 28 in Oct. lol), been academically educated (with acting), who knows how real performing art should be like, as well as have very clear view about himself and future.

Once he made up his mind, he’ll always try his best. In 2015, director of <who sleeps my bro> found LiXian for audition after watched <Feng Shui>, but felt he looks too smart, not really fit the character settings they looking for. But LiXian need this role, so he stop shaving his beard, as well as goes to moving companies and worked free for them to try to experience how a worker’s life should be like. So for this topless pic, fans saw him as masculine figure and fancy his muscles, but actually this pic were been taken after he worked a whole day for a moving company for free.

He classified himself as academic style, if he gonna taking some role, then he’ll just became his role. When filming for TM, he were just like Guo DeYou, speaking in a very lazy way. When taking the role in <the enigma of arrival>, where he’s a fish seller, he learned how to process a fish from zero till he can finish the whole session in 15s. So when compare to all these previous roles, to become HSY were actually much more relaxed. He said the most similar part between him and HSY are they were all very persistent.

He quoted Kitano Takeshi’s (a famous JPN director) words on weibo, “although this is hard, I still choose to live like burning fires”. “Because on DouBan, there will always be a TM with 8.3 score and <FengShui> with 8.6 score, and when you look at the cast list, you’ll see LiXian’s name”.

LiXian were actually the type who will watch his own works. He said by this way, he could find problems with his acting, sometimes the imperfection with emotions or expressions may not been noticed while filming, but after seeing on screen, he could clearly found out where he should improve in future. At least before gaining massive fame duo to HSY, LiXian always keeps a clear mind, he thinks “the process for his involvement with entertainment world is to gradually build some connections, but at the same time, not to be influenced too much.” He invested no effort with manage a perfect figure, there’s even criticism towards he’s very straightforward response when been misunderstood about his sexuality.

(Note: for this part, he actually been verbally (& ofc in a sexually way) harassed by some misbehaved homo individuals on weibo back in year 2012, then after been continuously harassed for a very long period of time, he finally fed up with all these and refused them with saying he “don’t like them (i.e. homo individuals who harassed him)”, then rumours saying he’s homophobia arises, and tbh, he still been haunted by some extreme homo individuals till today. Actually I am bit concerned whether I should translate this part out or not, cuz for issues related with LGBTQ were always bit sensitive, but still, as all these misbehaved individuals were just individuals, they shouldn’t be linked with any groups of ppl, as we believe that most of the LGBTQ friends were very great. No matter who you are, as an adult, you’ll need to be responsible with all your actions, so same for misbehaved individuals, no matter who they are, they should also pay responsibilities with their own moral failure, so that’s why I decide to explain this part out).

LiXian also very active on social media, apart from talking about his projects and sharing promotion post, he also enjoys sharing movies and music, about which book he’s been reading, and sometime will also share funny video clips of himself. He’s a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo and when CR changed football club, he also shared some of his emotions on weibo, but the top comment under that weibo only cares about his hairstyle.

Apart from when shooting posters for fashion magazines in suits, LiXian nearly shows no “big boss” style with his daily life. When he held his first weibo live stream chatting (years ago), plenty of fans gathered, but he actually watched NBA live match while live himself (cuz he don’t know what he should do with a live chat), and when saw fans saying they don’t understand NBA and basketballs, he starts interpret the match to them very passionately.

LiXian in <Feng Shui>, when he was 19

Few days ago, he tried very hard with contributing Jay Chou’s super topic on weibo, he screencap-ed the whole process and shared on weibo with caption “I tried…”. By that time is when GGS were on shown, and as he’s agent were kinda famous with managing promotion campaigns, some ppl questioned him as to seeking public attention by getting involved with this hot topic (note: Jay Chou’s super topic were once a hot topic on weibo), until ppl found pictures of him attending Jay Chou’s concert from two years ago, they finally believed that he’s really a fanboy of Jay Chou. (note: in some other interviews LiXian also said that his a fan since high school)

He’s very clear that actor is only a career, and no one is perfect, everybody have their own anger and dissatisfaction. “I actually think myself as a round shape, I wish ppl could see LiXian’s weak point, sharpness and dark side.” He said this to <Southern China Magazine> in previous interview, and they used this sentence as interview title.

-3-

LiXian do admitted in some previous interview, that he wish he could perform in some high popularity drama, or been selected by some famous directors. The most tricky scenario for this era is that ability with good acting won’t really guarantee you with good opportunity, but popularity (KOL) can. However after been overly-consumed, not every KOL can withdraw themselves safely.

Before he raised the fame, some ppl say he looks like Wang Lei, and he’ll answer “some other said I looks more like Chang Chen.”

For how he understand the environment of entertainment world, LiXian used to have a very lively description, “at the very beginning it feels like standing in a forest with thick fogs, you could see there’s shadows of trees, as well as knowing this place have all kinds of expectations, then when you start your exploration into the fogs, you gradually understand how massive and boundary-less this place actually is, but at the same time, there’s also poisoned spiders, tigers and wolfs, as well as dangerous plants that try to haunt you.”

The sudden change with fame is gradually reshaping him. After TM, busy schedules and fans praise actually influenced his life balance a lot. During an interview after TM, he said that times for reading books and watching movies are all been squeezed to either on flights or before sleep by all these busy schedules.

TM do brings him some “online popularity” for a while

He already stopped updating movie review for a while. To watch a movie per day used to be his habit, then after watching he’ll post some review on weibo. For moments like this (i.e. sharing reviews), the languages he used will be very serious. He also enjoys phrasing with famous ppl’s words, JPN authors were his favourite, and he’s very genuine when sharing all these.

He always commenting with long paragraphs “to express the point of value that I think are accurate”, but fans don’t always care that much. By the end of last year, he posted a long paragraph on Instagram, sharing some very personal feelings: “I want to share with you the most interesting things I experienced, but you only cares about gossip. I am sharing my insight of life, but you only care if I have girlfriend or not, or if I still looks good or not. I feels upset, like before, like now……what I’ve failed is not with my hairstyle, but actually all my hard working ever since.” (Note: for hairstyle he mentioned here is because LiXian dyed his hair last winter before he went to diving and later his hair colour were been affected a lot by the sea water and some fans start judging him.)

When compares with an over 10M followers weibo, LiXian’s more real on his instagram account. He’s instagram only got roughly 700k followers (note: 260k before GGS been aired), can be seen as his “secret garden”, for things that he’s not willing or not convenient with sharing on weibo, he’ll post on instagram.

Instagram is his small paradise for his free soul, you can find many interesting pics on there, like using funny facial masks, or wearing grapefruit peel as a hat, also sometime he’ll “flash” at midnight (referring to one of his post).

He had shared a picture on weibo, with his back when he just finished with some Chinese traditional medication, caption with “Actually for everyday, I am asking myself how long can I still hang in there. But as long as I still have strength left, will try to finish today’s work with my best.” And for this same picture when he uploaded on Instagram, the caption became much straightforward —– “hard to earn money, excrement also yuck.” (note: a Chinese slang describing hardness of life)

(This paragraph omitted, mainly about unrelated celebs)

The difference between weibo and instagram

So when LiXian finally raised his fame and enjoying with current popularity, there’s also dangerous signals been sensed. Ppl try to get even more “fun” from him and there’s also questions been raised at some popular Q&A website asking “everybody’s talking about LiXian now, so did he really that perfect?”

Entertainment industry were never an inclusive place, and fans sometime can be even harsh. Probably all celebs will face the same difficulty: when gaining popularity, they have to sacrifice their freedom. With LiXian’s newest Instagram post (refers to the one posted on 20190729), he said he felt exhausted recently (i.e. very busy with working), and from now on with a life under spotlight, he need to be even more careful with his every step.

However, being able to raise fame may still worth-worthy with taking all related risks. “There are two most important things in one’s life, one is freedom, and the other one is to do what you likes. Only very few ppl could achieve with both at the same time, and for most of the majorities, they don’t even have any of these. So for me, as I am now actually been doing what I likes to do (i.e. being an actor), so I could give up some of my freedom to some extent in return.” LiXian once said so.

Before been favoured by massive popularity, he always wanted to be a professional actor that “speaks by his character”, “I don’t need ppl to know who is LiXian, the only thing I need is ppl knows who is Xie Xun, who is Guo DeYou, who is Lin Tao and who is Chang JianXiong (i.e. all his previous roles),” then LiXian follows on, “a lot of ppl saying that oh I know him from <Dr.Qin>, but I don’t really know his name (i.e. they only knows his character’s name, but not his real name), I feels good about this, this is how I wished.”

However now, everybody knows who LiXian is, and the real problem is, will HSY be the only character that ppl gonna remembered about him.

<love story 1980> stills, 2018. LiXian plays as ML named Liang ZhengWen

In the past, when some interviewers called him as “idol”, LiXian will fix them, “we are actors, not idol.” He knows that actor, idol and celebs are 3 different identities. He used to think about only became an actor, but his seniors and teachers made he realised that how to balancing between all these identities are more important.

He debuted as an actor and before he raised fame, he had already been worked hard for many years and kept his 3 points well. With the 6 points of luck brings by GGS also approaching to the end, how to keep a new balance with all these changes will now be the most critical challenge for him.

LiXian used to say that he’s a very patient type, no matter for choosing project, or for his life plan, he’ll just follows what fate brings him. He believes that to progress step by step, and to consolidate a strong foundation are the most important basis for a better future.

In April 2018, year after TM been aired, LiXian had an interview with <Southern China Magazine>. The popularity gathered from TM already cooled down by that time and still not very much ppl knows him. He said he still “lives in his own world”, “wearing shorts, t-shirt, slippers, not washing hair and not hide it with a cap, just go out like this, ride a bicycle and go to local market.” He said he’ve seen paparazzi in his living community many times, “but don’t want to change my lifestyle just because of them.”

We wish that after the summer of 2019, he can still keeps with himself like this.
